Dress for Success

Part of promoting your business is having photos and possibly videos for use on your website, social media and general marketing. But have you thought about what you should wear when it’s time to get in front of a camera?

Before you head to the closet, let’s talk first about a few key considerations and some tips to help you decide.

As always, we’re here to help! During our pre-shoot consultation we’ll discuss what to wear to ensure you feel poised and prepared.

What’s the purpose of the photo?

Website portraits and candid photos: You’ll likely want to coordinate with your team to reflect a consistent look and feel, be it something more formal or something more casual. Present an image that’s consistent with your brand. For example, a financial or legal firm would dress more conservatively than say a tech firm or creative agency that’s maybe more relaxed. We’ll talk about and consider the background or setting of your photos, too, to ensure that your attire complements it.

Professional engagements: Will you be appearing at a conference or other event? For promotional photos, you might choose to wear something professional that reflects your individuality.

General tips on what to wear

Avoid patterns that may cause distortions in photos. Small, busy patterns like tight stripes or checks can cause a moiré effect on the camera. Here are some more tried and true ideas:

  • Choose solid colors. If possible, wear colors that reflect or complement your brand.
  • Avoid trendy clothing that may go out of style soon.
  • Wear clothing that fits well and is neither too loose nor too tight.
  • Choose something to wear that gives you a feeling of confidence.
  • Make sure your clothing is clean, lint-free and wrinkle-free.
  • Remove things from your pockets to avoid lumps and bulges in photos.
  • Choose clean, professional footwear that matches your outfit and comfort level.
  • If you wear glasses, you might consider removing them for some shots, if you’re comfortable doing so.
  • Keep makeup and hair looking authentic, choosing a style that complements your natural tone and suits the overall look of the portrait.
  • If the photo shoot is outdoors, dress appropriately for the weather and the setting.

You should also bring more than one outfit to the shoot so that you’ll have choices and be prepared should there be any apparel mishaps.

What to Wear

Should you wear a uniform or work attire?

If you’re in a public-facing role, wearing appropriate apparel looks authentic and conveys professionalism and expertise. We usually recommend that you dress as you would at your place of business, but there could be exceptions depending on the type of photo shoot.

Apparel is an important part of our photo and video planning discussions. We welcome your questions and ideas to ensure you feel confident.

Uniform or Work Attire
