I’m beginning to understand why our triathlon team’s name is Team Endure.
Endurance: The fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way (New Oxford American Dictionary)
I’m learning that endurance defines triathlon training. One foot in front of the other, one mental leap to the next — it’s all about moving forward despite adversity.
Here’s what I know about endurance:
- By definition, it’s hard, really hard
- In order to persist, you have to get passed the mental snare
“…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)
David, our TG photographer, sent that to me. A great reminder: Get rid of the stuff that’s holding you back and follow God wherever He’s leading. I think that’s become the theme of my life.
So, what am I going to do? I’m going to endure. I’m going to get up in the morning and do my workouts. I’m going to rely on God to give me mental and physical strength to keep moving forward. And I’m going to do everything I can to stop the negative talk in my head.
Who knew triathlon-training would require such soul-searching? Not me!
